A soulful journey goes far beyond the typical tourist itinerary with its list of popular and historical sites. A trip with the potential to become a life-changing experience requires a little more than that. When we travel to a different country, we have the opportunity to explore “other worlds,” other cultures, and ways of seeing life. A soulful journey is one that not only shows you a new place but also reveals a new version of yourself.
The destination, the calling.
We live in a world where the possibilities are endless. There are thousands of destinations available, each with completely different cultures, energies, and experiences. With so many options, which one should you choose?
If you want to add a touch of magic and mysticism to your travel experience, the answer might be as simple as choosing the place that calls to you. That destination that, for some strange reason, seems to evoke a spark within you. That place that repeatedly appears in your mind without a logical explanation. The one that sparks curiosity, excitement, or even nostalgia before you’ve even been there.
The time Mongolia called me.
During a transitional period in my life, I discovered throat singing, an ancient Mongolian musical style that might seem quite strange and unusual to those unfamiliar with it. There was something special about this music; listening to it gave me the strength I needed to move forward.
The more I listened to this music, the more I noticed that many songs had “Mongolia” in their title. This sparked my curiosity. At the time, I knew practically nothing about the country, so I began to research it. I discovered a land of resilient nomads, wild horses, endless steppes, and the birthplace of the largest empire in history. A spark ignited within me. I felt, quite intuitively, that I had to go and explore Mongolia for myself.
What if no place calls me?
Not everyone experiences that immediate connection with a specific destination, and that’s okay. For those seeking inspiration, a curious tool that might be of interest is locational astrology. This proposes that, based on the position of the stars at the time of our birth, there are places in the world whose energy might resonate more with us. It’s not a proven science, but it can be a fun way to explore possibilities.
On platforms like Astro.com, you can enter your birth details and view a map with different regions associated with certain astrological influences. Perhaps, looking at the map, a place will spark your curiosity. That might be enough to get you started.
I’ve got the place, now what?
For me, the true secret to an unforgettable travel experience lies in cultural immersion. It’s not just about visiting tourist sites and taking pretty pictures. It’s about connecting with the people who live there, because they are the ones who truly give the place its soul.
The best way to get to know a destination is by spending time with the locals: listening to their stories, observing their customs, tasting their everyday food, and understanding how they really live. That’s when travel ceases to be superficial.
My favorite strategy: Couchsurfing and Volunteering.
Cultural immersion can be divided into different levels, depending on how deep we want to go in our exploration:
Level 1: the encounter.
We arrange to spend a few hours with someone from the area; this person showed us their city and hidden corners that don’t appear in tourist guides, and tells us how they perceive their country and life there.
Level 2: coexistence.
Here, the experience becomes much more intimate and authentic. Staying with a local (through platforms like Couchsurfing) offers you the opportunity to observe the small details of daily life: family dynamics, what’s being cooked, how people live in the neighborhood, and their real concerns and customs.
Even if it’s just for a few days, it can be much more rewarding than staying in a perfectly designed hotel that’s disconnected from the local reality. Sharing the kitchen and hearing about the place directly from someone who lives there offers a genuine connection.
Level 3: Volunteering, total immersion.
Through platforms like Workaway or Worldpackers, we have a wide range of opportunities at our disposal, tailored to our personal interests: from working on farms and in hostels to teaching languages or babysitting.
You’re no longer just a visitor; you temporarily become part of the community. The interaction evolves from a couple of days to entire weeks. The local culture becomes part of your daily routine. And it’s precisely there that the biggest transformations begin.
Little by little, we shed our usual identity, our automatic habits, and our comfort zone. We live according to different rhythms, different priorities, and different ways of understanding life. And in that process, inevitably, something within us changes.
What makes a trip truly unforgettable.
That’s exactly what I experienced when I finally went to Mongolia. That trip, which began with the sound of their throat singing, gave me one of the most significant experiences of my life. Beyond the infinitely beautiful landscapes, from the first moment I arrived in Mongolia, I felt a special energy in my body. The affection I received in every encounter with Mongolians was something special; I felt like I had reunited with a family I had somehow lost. Each encounter healed something in me. Today, every time I remember my time in Mongolia, my soul smiles, and I feel happy to have followed that calling.
Perhaps that’s what makes a trip an unforgettable experience. It’s not the places we mark on a map, but the versions of ourselves we discover along the way and the certainty that the world is much more welcoming than we think.
A trip with soul leaves you with much more than anecdotes; it leaves you with the beautiful feeling of having found a family on the other side of the world to which you can always return.
And you, have you ever felt that “calling”?
I’d love to hear from you: Is there a corner of the world that inexplicably fascinates you, or a trip that completely changed your life?
